90s Anime That Are Underrated But You Should Watch

The 90s era was indeed a very memorable era for some people. Many people really miss that era and want to go back to that time.

Likewise in the anime industry, the 90s era is arguably the golden era of the anime world. Lots of good anime that aired in the decade of the 90s. We just call it Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Hunter X Hunter, and many more.

But aside from what I just mentioned, there are still a lot of anime that aired in the 90s, but many people don't know or are underrated. Well, in this article, I'm going to share about 7 anime 90s that are underrated but you have to watch them.

• Lodoss-tou Senki (Spring 1990)

Lodoss-tou Senki or Record Of Lodoss War is one of the older anime that you should not miss. Maybe also some of you readers of this article did not know that there is an old anime named that way. Therefore, I entered this anime into a list of underrated 90s anime.

For those of you who don't know, Lodoss-tou Senki is an anime adapted from a novel series written by Ryo Mizuno. This anime air with 13 episodes from 1990 and ends in 1991.

This anime carries the action genre in which there are some very touching epic scenes. This anime tells about a world filled with wars that have occurred for thousands of years.  After these thousands of years, Lodoss and his kingdom are on the verge of peace. However, hopes for peace were shrunk when ancient magicians woke up and caused political turmoil throughout the country. As a result, all races in the world join forces to defeat the evil witch.

• Shoujo Kakumei Utena (Spring 1997)

Shoujo Kakumei Utena or Revolutionary Girl Utena is a revolutionary anime Shoujo series that opposes gender stereotypes by displaying the main character in the form of a tomboyish girl hero named Utena Tenjou.

Utena vowed to become a prince - not a princess - after someone saved her while she was young. The prince entrusted Utena with a rose ring and promised he would meet him again someday.

Years later, Utena came to a place called the Ootori Academy where at that time there was a duel fighting to get the Bride, Anthy Himemiya, and the mysterious power she had. Utena was involved in the dangerous game.

This anime aired 39 episodes in 1997. For those of you who have never watched this old underrated anime, I recommend watching it immediately, especially for those of you who like comedy drama anime whose main character is female.

• Blue Gender (Fall 1999)

Furthermore, there is the Blue Gender anime that carries the adventure genre and is also flavored with mecha and romance themes. This anime aired in 26 episodes from 1999 to early 2000.

This anime takes the plot of "Man vs. Bug" or "Humans vs. Insects" in which the anime is set in a future filled with "Blue", which is an alien insect race that rules the earth. The main character in this anime series, Yuji Kaido awakens from his sleep only to witness the terrible future that he is now experiencing. He was then registered to join the fight against Blue by a beautiful and cold soldier named Marlene Angel.

For those of you who like fun science fiction or sci-fi stories about fighting aliens, this anime can be a recommendation for you. In addition, this anime also has a pretty good visual appearance for the size of the 90s anime.

• Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (Fall 1998)

Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou or other names His And Her Circumstances is a romantic comedy anime that aired in 1998 that tells of a selfish girl named Miyazawa Yukino who lives a strange and crazy life of popularity as a middle school student. When a newcomer named Arima Soichiro topped Yukino, Yukino felt threatened by his popularity.

One time, Soichiro also discovered the original nature of Yukino who turned out to be a spoiled figure, then Soichiro blackmailed him to get what he wanted.  However, that's where feelings arise between the two of them and learn to be honest with themselves.

This anime aired 26 episodes in 1998.

• Blue Seed (Fall 1994)

Blue Seed is an anime inspired by the Japanese mythology Izumo Cycle. This anime tells the journey of a Momiji Fujimiya, who studies the lives of the average person as uneven as he seems.  After hearing that he was the newest descendant of the large Kushinada family, he was asked by a government agent to use his inheritance power to stop the demon plant monster Aragami who wanted to destroy Japan.

This anime aired from 1994 to 1995 with 26 episodes.

• Fushigi no Umi no Nadia (Spring 1990)

Inspired by the literary work of French novelist Jules Verne (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) and written by anime legend Hayao Miyazaki, Nadia: The Secret of Water or Fushigi no Umi no Nadia tells the adventure of 14-year-old Nadia la Arwall in her quest to return to Africa. Along the way, he joins Captain Nemo on the Nautilus submarine to save the world from Neo-Atlantis and its sinister leader, Gargoyle. Then, he joined Jean Ratlique, a young and brave inventor.

• Taiho Shicau zo (Summer 1994)

Taiho Shicauzo or You're Under Arrest is an anime series that aired in 1994 which tells about two women and their lives in the police. The two women are Natsumi and Miyuki who fought with each other during their initial pairing.  But over time, their friendship was strengthened by every crazy case they handled.

This anime is suitable for those of you who like anime action comedy because this anime presents lots of fun action comedy scenes about two police girls.
