10. The French Connection (1971)

In order of ten, we meet a film called The French Connection that aired in 1971. The film presents a part of the thriller about the police, and also tells part about international gangster drama. The French Connection is one of the most praised films in each of these genres.

The film stars Gene Hackman, who plays a New York detective named "Popeye" who uncovers drug trafficking cases in the French city of New York.  This film has a unique story in the gangster genre because it is told from the point of view of the police, who solved the case of an alley. Even though it was told from the point of view of the police, I considered the film The French Connection to be included as a gangster film even though it was not told from the point of view of gangsters.

9. Gomorrah (2008)

In the early 2000s, world culture grew by seeing gangster-themed films as a sensational genre. Gangster films are labeled as films that are full of moral praise, because they often present stories of bad people who are not necessarily evil.

Gomorrah is a film based on a book of the same name about the original Mafia group from Naples, whose story does not present a glamorous, delicious, and luxurious gang life. Instead, Gomorrah is the opposite of gangster films that have inspired young people to live as criminals. So in other words, this film actually tells the unpleasant feeling of living as a gangster so that young subjects do not follow the lifestyle of the gangsters.

8. A Prophet (2009)

A Prophet is a film directed by Jacques Audiard which tells the story of a young man who found himself recruited into a Mafia organization from Corsica, France while serving his prison sentence. Unlike most other gangster films, A Prophet is a gangster film with a modern background.

In the middle of the film, there is a story of the struggle between French Muslim culture and Corsica culture. The protagonist of this film, played by Tahar Rahim, is a man trapped between the two cultures. On the one hand, he must obey the culture of his ancestors and on the other hand, he must also obey the teachings of his religion.

This film is arguably a film rooted in old gangster films such as The French Connection and The Godfather.  The theme is the same, but displayed in a more modern way.

City of God is a unique gangster film for several reasons. These reasons include the film being told by the narrator like a documentary, then this film also uses photography techniques to connect the story, and the last reason in this film is that this film is one of several leading Brazilian gangster films, aka This film is known not only by Brazilians, but also from film lovers all over the world.

I personally watched several gangster films from various perspectives, some from the point of view of criminals, police, and observers. But I was quite surprised by this one gangster film because of his perspective from someone who documented it.

Yes, City of God is a film that tells about the ups and downs of the underground mafia throughout the Cidade de Deus favela in Brazil. Because it is set in the favela, this film also involves the cast consisting of people who live in the favela. The entire film carried documentary style mixed with the tense atmosphere presented in the film.

Next is Eastern Promises, a Russian gangster film. You might be amazed at this film, one of which is because of the Russian accent of the very superior actor Viggo Mortensen, and many more things that can make you amazed at this film. The Eastern Promises film is directed by David Cronenberg who follows the script made by Steven Knight.

The film tells the story of a British nurse who is ensnared in the Russian Mafia after finding the notebook of a young girl who connects her pregnancy with a prominent mafia. Eastern Promises is also arguably one of Mortensen's best performances as long as he plays in various films.

1931? Yes, you are not mistaken and I didn't write wrong. It is true, that the gangster film titled The Public Enemy was aired in 1931 or about 90 years ago.

Then what is the background of this film? This film airs on Prohibition Era or the Era of Prohibition that occurred in the period of the 1920s to 1933 in the United States. Unintentionally, that era instead produced some of the most interesting Hollywood films ever made.  One of them is this film.

That era was a fundamental transition era for the American people. The wealth and grandeur inherent in the United States around the 1920s, was completely exhausted during the coming decade. Great depression also occurred in that era in America.

Well, The Public Enemy puts these issues in the middle of the film while telling one of the first great stories of gangsters in film history.

4. Once Upon A Time In America (1984)

Once Upon A Time In America is one of the craziest films ever made. This film is the last film of the legendary director Sergio Leone and the only film he completed in the last thirteen years of his life.

He initially wanted the film to be split into two parts, each of which lasted for three hours, but the studio that produced the film told him he had to cut it into just one film. Leone was forced to cut it to 269 minutes, but the studio was still unsatisfied with the 269 minutes because it was still too long.  He also conceded by the studio because in the end the film was cut to 229 minutes, and worse, the American version was cut even shorter to 139 minutes without his permission.

The results of the deduction instead resulted in mass confusion among the audience. But take it easy, in 2012 the 255 minute version was available to the public.

For those of you who don't know, this film is a film that tells the story of friendship and loyalty that stretched for decades in New York City. One of the actors in this film, Robert De Niro, gave one of the best performances in his career as a mafia leader full of conflict.  Some scenes in this film are indeed very heavy and exceed the limits, even for gangster film standards though.  But even so, the uncut version of Once Upon A Time in America is one of the five best gangster films of all time.

3. The Godfather (1972)

Talking about the best gangster films of all time, it's not complete if we don't put this one gangster film on the list. This film by director Francis Ford Coppola is a film adapted from Mario Puzo's novel of the same name.

The Godfather is the most iconic gangster film ever made. Every cinema fan will know and is familiar with the picture of Don Vito holding a cat, a horse in bed, or a picture of Michael closing a door in his previous life. If there are people who vilify the movie The Godfather, maybe that person watching the movie skip.

2. Goodfellas (1990)

Next is the Goodfellas film which is a movie that I have watched several times. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese based on an adaptation of the novel titled Nicholas Pillegi's Wiseguy.

The film starts with a narrator who says "as far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster". From there, this film will take you around and explore the world of Italian gangsters in Brooklyn, and after you watch half of this film, you might want to become a gangster too, because this film presents how cool a gangster is.

Like most gangster films, there are sex scenes, drugs, and many more depraved things that are displayed in this film.

1. The Godfather Part II (1974)

And on the list of the best gangster films of all time nerohanx version, the first sequence is held by the film The Godfather Part II which is a continuation of the film The Godfather. For two parts, we will see how the climbing of gangsters is directly correlated with moral decline.

I admit, that both of these films are masterclasses, but The Godfather Part II takes the top spot on this list, because this film is a gangster film that is arguably very exciting and without flaws.
