• Zankyou No Terror

Aired: Summer 2014
Studio: MAPPA

Zankyou No Terror or Terror In Resonance is a thriller anime made by Shinichiro Watanabe, a director who is known for his uniqueness in every series he is working on. Shinichiro Watanabe is known several times to make popular anime series such as Sakamichi No Apollon, Samurai Champloo and of course the best known, Cowboy Bepop.

This anime tells how Tokyo was attacked by terrorists who appeared suddenly and only showed themselves in videos uploaded on the internet. The police were overwhelmed in calming the civilians and solving the instructions given by the terrorist who were always uploaded on the internet before the terror incident began. As the world searched for those who carried out the terrorist events, two children came up with big plans called Nine and Twelve, they joined and had another name, "Sphinx" which had a mission to terrorize this world.

Duration 11 episodes x 24 minutes. In addition to the thriller, Zankyou no Terror also carries the psychological and action genres that you will get from this anime. The story taken by Watanabe also utilized the momentum of many terrorism cases that occurred at that time. In addition, this series also presents levels of action similar to the Holywood film so that the plot of this series does not seem crisp and predictable.

• Psycho-Pass

Aired: Fall 2012 (Season 1), Fall 2014 (Season 2), Fall 2019 (Season 3)
Studio: Production I.G

Psycho Pass is an original anime made by Production I.G studio which also produces Ghost in the Shell series and XXXHolic. This anime was only serialized in the form of manga in November 2012. The first impression I got when I first watched this anime was: this anime is quite similar to Guilty Crown, in terms of animation, environment, and especially OST, considering the 2 ending songs of this anime sung by Egoist.

Taking a theme in the future, when technology has been very advanced, to the point where humans have succeeded in creating a system called the Sibyl System, which is considered 'perfect' in creating well-being in society, because the system is able to assess one's mental health, talents, and tendencies in the form of numbers called 'Psycho Pass'.

The story of Psycho Pass is highly weighted, with interesting detective-style mystery cases, containing many elements of humanity such as the title, poking around in human psychology, an irony in which the existence of the Sibyl System in the future and highly sophisticated technology available with the intention for the sake of 'people's welfare', it actually makes human value itself so 'low' because everything is measured by one benchmark of numbers, people unconsciously lose freedom in determining their life choices because everything is set by the system, become fragile, powerless and lose orientation about good and evil because all rely heavily on the system, even when the system is only a camouflage of the actual reality.

The weighted story is also equipped with elements of surprise and plot twist that is unexpected and cool, told with a steady plot and epic climax that is quite epic.

• Higashi No Eden

Aired: Spring 2009
Studio: Production I.G

Higashi No Eden is a thriller mystery anime that provides a plot that is easy to understand but difficult to guess.  Each episode of this anime will give its own impressions and make the audience want to continue watching the following episodes.

It is said, on November 22, 2010, ten missiles attacked Japan. However, the action did not cause casualties, and was soon forgotten by almost everyone.  Then 3 months later, Saki Morimi is a young woman who is currently in the United States on her graduation trip.  But when he was in front of the White House, Washington DC, he was in trouble, and unexpectedly one of his compatriots saved him. However, the man who introduced himself as Akira Takizawa was a mysterious person.

Well, in this anime you will be curious and tense with the story, especially about the mysterious Akira Takizawa.

• Mirai Nikki

Aired: Fall 2011
Studio: Asread

Mirai Nikki is one of the anime made by the studio Asread. Not much I know about this studio apart from the fact that he mostly releases anime with slightly dark themes like Mirai Nikki and Corps Party, but there are times when they also come out with ecchi / harem genre anime like Shuffle!.

This anime tells the story of a boy named Yukiteru Amano who has some kind of imaginary friend named Deus Ex Machina (literally meaning God / God from a machine).

So to make a long story short, it turned out that Deus Ex Machina was not the imaginary friend Amano had been thinking about. It turns out he is a genuine god who has the power to manage time. Deus ex Machina himself distributed a kind of diary to Yuki and a select few (about twelve people). This diary book is not an ordinary diary but a special book. Each book has its own ability to see the future.

Well, the story is enough to end there, because I'm afraid if this article become a spoiler. If you don't know, this anime is really a thriller anime that pretty much presents sadistic scenes in it. In fact, there is a girl character here, namely Yuno Gasai who became the most popular yandere character in the anime world.

• Mousou Dairinin

Aired: Winter 2004
Studio: Madhouse

Mousou Dairinin or Paranoia Agent is an anime directed by Satoshi Kon (director of Paprika, Perfect Blue and Tokyo God Father), one of my favorite directors. This anime tells the story of a "Shonen bat" figure who attacks people who are in trouble. This figure is characterized by using inliner and a golden baseball bat.

Each episode of this has a different protagonist and tells a different point of view of the problem. Starting from the problem of work deadlines, the exclusion of friends around, debt, multiple personalities, useless feelings and much more. At least one of the protagonist's stories has a common problem at hand.

In my opinion, this anime is one of the masterpieces of a genius who is reminding us that the problem exists is not to be avoided but to be faced with and to be careful of the media that can lead to public perception. That's what makes Paranoia Agent the best thriller anime that you don't want to miss.

Overall, this anime tells about a time machine which means that this anime besides thriller genre also carries the scifi genre. Lots of tense scenes that you will get from this anime.

• B: The Beginning

Aired: Winter 2018
Studio: Production I.G

On March 2, 2018, Netflix released the anime B: The Beginning. 12 episodes can be directly witnessed on the same day. B: The Beginning is just one of the original anime lists produced by streaming giant Netflix and the Japanese anime studio. This Netflix anime production kicked off the Japanese anime production standard which is usually a dish for other companies, such as music labels, film distributors, book publishers, and others. The result, Netflix anime usually carries a variety of themes and premises, as well as excellent animation quality.

The brain of this anime is Kazuto Nakazawa, director and character designer who is involved in several “stylish” anime productions such as Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai, even Kill Bill, The Animatrix, and Linkin Park's Breaking the Habit video clip.

B: The Beginning takes place in a fictitious kingdom called Cremona. The country that resides in the islands is being stirred by a serial murder case.  The culprit is called Killer B, because it left a sign of the letter B at the scene.

Simply put, B: The Beginning can be likened to a combination of the anime Terror in Resonance with Tokyo Ghoul. In plain view, B: The Beginning is a crime thriller anime where you will be invited to explore various crime and murder cases.

• Jigoku Shoujo

Aired: Fall 2005
Studio: Studio Deen

It all starts with the appearance of a hell site (Hell Link) that can only be accessed at midnight. People who use the site are people who have a grudge against others. If they want to send a hated person to hell, then they must write the name of the person they hate on the site.

If a request is granted, Enma Ai, a hell girl, will come to the person who wants revenge as soon as possible. Usually its appearance is marked by the arrival of message which will change the cellphone screen to red. Then Enma Ai will appear in her school uniform and give a straw doll with a red string wrapped around the doll's neck. If the person is serious about wanting revenge, they have to pull the string.  But by pulling the thread, they also run the risk, that they will go to hell after death and will never see heaven.

Overall, this is an anime with dark and rather horror nuances. However, that's what you want right?

The series opens with the introduction of a group of white-haired children, known as the "Befort Children", named after "Befort" a fictional village in Belgium where their existence was first recorded in 1489. This group of enigmatic children has been spotted  at different times and places in Europe for over 500 years.
